Beauty

I love this image for its beauty. The photo feels fancy and vintage. It was taken in a campus area sports bar in the Midwestern United States. There really isn’t anything fancy about this cheap little place where you place your order at the bar and they call your number over the loudspeaker when it’s ready.

They still use the old adding machine cash registers. Your tab comes printed on the old school adding machine paper. If you open a tab they hold your card and attach it to a tiny clipboard with a handwritten tally of your order. The menu is a one-sided and laminated card the size of a placemat.

It’s one of my favorite places to photograph because it carries the history of its college town within its walls. It’s one of my favorite places to eat because they serve quality bar style food at a low affordable price. And, it’s one of my favorite places to go because I love how it feels.

How does this image make you feel? Does it strike a story within you? If so, I’d love to hear about it. Maybe, pretend you’re walking into this building for the first time. Tell us what happens next.

  1. It seems very atmospheric to me. I imagine myself seated at a booth table (I am sure a place like this would have booths) and I’d order a coffee and read my book and then out of the corner of my eye I would be spying the locals in the place and making up stories or poems about them. I am in a bit of a rush now so I can take this fantasy any further but its a great prompt to activate an imaginative journey.
